The
author has skilfully taken the Jersey Devil urban myth, and made it into
an interesting story. Tales of devils and immortals have been around for
centuries, but never been validated in modern times.
When
teenagers find a dead woman beside what looks like a monster with their
hearts taken brings fear to Pine Haven. The media descends on the small
town making it harder to keep the horror secret. Edie Campbell, a local
anthropologist, is called in to help Tyler the pathologist identify the
dead beast.
Edie
senses there is more to the deaths than appears on the surface. Karl Urich
the town’s chief of police, Edie’s ex-lover, uses the murders as an excuse
to get close to her again. When Aidan LaMont comes to claim the body,
there’s an instant attraction between him and Edie. This leads to a
lover’s triangle, but Edie knows what she wants, the sensual pull that
reaches out from Aidan sets her body humming. More deaths and attempted
murders are revealed. If the truth comes out, the town will never be the
same again, but a war has begun in the dark woods, bringing even more
danger to the town. Romance is blooming despite the hidden danger as Edie
begins to learn more of her heritage and the way of life Aidan leads
hidden from mortal eyes.
IMMORATI is a
dark tale of passions that run deep as a war that has ignited in the
forest and spilt over into the town. The conflicts that are the main
character’s face are varied and many as Aidan find himself not only
fighting his sexual desires but the beasts that dwell in the woods. The
characters are well drawn and realistic as their emotions and agendas are
revealed. Tension is kept high enough to make the reader turn pages with
realistic and easy to understand dialogue. There are some very interesting
secondary characters. There is also a clash between Aidan and his father
adding to the suspense. The tale is fully resolved before the ending, with
a slight twist that is very unexpected.
For
readers that like their reading to contain something a little different
with some great action scenes this reviewer recommends IMMORATI as
an ideal choice.
